About this collection

Ziyarat — salutational visitation — comprises liturgical greetings sent to the Prophet ﷺ, the Imams (a.s.), and Sayyidah Fatima (s.a.). Some ziyarat are tied to specific occasions (Ziyarat Ashura, Ziyarat Arbaeen); others — like Ziyarat Aminullah and the universal Ziyarat Jamia Kabira — can be recited any day of the year.

Primary sources for the genre are the works of Shaykh Mufid, Sayyid Ibn Tawus, and Allamah Majlisi; the most-recited ziyarat are gathered in Shaykh Abbas Qummi's Mafatih al-Jinan.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a ziyarat?
The word literally means 'to visit'. Technically, a ziyarat is a formal text of greeting and remembrance directed to one of the infallibles — recited either at their shrine (ziyarah qariba) or from afar (ziyarah ba'eedah).
  • Why is Ziyarat Ashura considered especially important?
Ziyarat Ashura is transmitted through Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) and Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.). It may be recited every day, not only on the Day of Ashura, and is among the most highly emphasised ziyarat in Shia tradition.
  • Must ziyarat be performed at a shrine to be valid?
No. Shia tradition recognises 'ziyarah min ba'eed' — visitation from a distance — and many devotional practices recommend it. Sincerity of intention and observance of etiquette are the conditions, not physical proximity.
