Iran's Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf issued a sharp response on Friday to remarks by US Senator Marco Rubio regarding Iran's influence over the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on his X account late Friday, Ghalibaf wrote, "Throughout history, we Iranians have faced those who declared themselves masters of the universe and sought to erase ancient civilizations. They came in fire and flame, only to depart in dust and shame." He added, "Those who chase Alexander's legacy will share Valerian's fate: you will kneel."
The exchange follows Rubio's statement on Wednesday that Iran has "lost complete control" of the waterway, pointing to a recovery in Gulf oil exports in September. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, and control over it has been a recurring point of tension between Iran and the United States.
Ghalibaf's remarks invoke historical references to Alexander the Great and the Roman Emperor Valerian, who was captured by Persian forces in the 3rd century. The statement reflects ongoing rhetorical tensions between Iranian officials and US policymakers over regional influence and maritime security.
According to Mehr News, the exchange underscores the continuing war of words between Tehran and Washington over the Strait of Hormuz and broader geopolitical issues.
