Yemeni forces have downed a Wing Loong II armed reconnaissance drone, according to a statement by Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesman for the Yemeni Armed Forces. The announcement was reported by Al-Masirah, the media outlet affiliated with the Houthi movement.
In the same statement, Saree said that Saudi fighter jets, specifically F-15s and Typhoons taking off from the Khamis Mushait and Taif bases, carried out 28 airstrikes. He added that the total number of airstrikes since the escalation of what he described as Saudi hostile actions against the country and its people has risen to 760.
The report did not specify the location or time of the drone downing, nor did it provide further details on the airstrikes or any casualties. The Saudi-led coalition has not commented on the claim.
The Wing Loong II is a Chinese-made unmanned aerial vehicle used for armed reconnaissance and strike missions. It has been employed by the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, according to previous reports.
Yemen has been mired in conflict since 2014, when the Houthi movement took control of the capital, Sanaa. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to restore the internationally recognized government. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
According to Mehr News, which cited Al-Masirah, the Yemeni Armed Forces spokesman provided these figures in his latest statement on the ongoing hostilities.
