SaveIran Mission Says West's New IAEA Resolution Move Will Fail
Iran's mission to Vienna-based organizations said on Friday that the United States and the three European countries (E3) – Germany, Britain, and France – are planning to submit a new resolution against Iran to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The mission shared a post on X, three days before the IAEA Board of Governors convenes its regular September meeting, where Iran's nuclear program is on the agenda.
According to reports citing diplomatic sources, the planned resolution, if approved, would refer Iran's nuclear issue to the UN Security Council in New York. This move comes nearly a year after the Western countries referred Iran's nuclear case to the Security Council under the so-called snapback mechanism envisioned in the 2015 nuclear deal, which expired in October 2025. That earlier move triggered the mechanism, which called for restoring UN sanctions against Iran.
In its post, the Iranian mission said: "US and E3 once again intend to submit a resolution against Iran to the IAEA Board of Governors and, as they claim, refer Iran's nuclear issue to the UN Security Council in New York." The mission added: "Apparently, they themselves no longer believe in snapback and the return of Iran's nuclear issue to the UN Security Council's agenda, which they had previously carried out and heavily propagandized."
The mission stressed that the new move will bear no result, stating: "This move is a clear sign of the complete failure of the snapback illusion. Their new desperate action will bring them no benefit either, and they won’t gain anything out of it."
According to Mehr News Agency, the post was shared on Friday evening, and the IAEA Board of Governors meeting is scheduled to begin on Monday. The report by Mehr News Agency added that the Iranian mission's statement reflects Tehran's view that the Western push is futile and that Iran's nuclear program remains peaceful and within the framework of international regulations.
