KARBALA, Jun. 07 (MNA) – A ceremony was held at the holy shrine of Hazrat Abalfazl al-Abbas (AS) in Karbala, Iraq, to wash and dust the dome ahead of the mourning month of Muharram. The ritual, which takes place annually, involves cleaning the dome's exterior and interior surfaces to prepare the shrine for the large number of pilgrims expected during Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During Muharram, Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (s), and his companions in the Battle of Karbala. Hazrat Abalfazl al-Abbas (AS), the half-brother of Imam Hussain (AS), is revered for his loyalty and bravery in that battle. The shrine, located near the Imam Hussain (AS) shrine in Karbala, is one of the holiest sites for Shia Muslims. According to Mehr News Agency, the washing and dusting ceremony is part of the preparations for the mourning rituals that begin with the sighting of the crescent moon for Muharram.
