Venezuela's Vice President Jorge Rodríguez announced on Monday that the death toll from the devastating earthquakes that struck the country on June 24 has risen to 4,118. Rodríguez, who is also the brother of acting head of government Delcy Rodríguez, stated that 16,740 people were injured in the disaster. Nearly 18,000 individuals lost their homes, according to the German Press Agency (DPA).
The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24, followed by more than 1,000 significantly weaker aftershocks. The coastal city of La Guaira, near the capital Caracas, was particularly hard hit, with many buildings reduced to ruins. Experts have indicated that it is extremely unlikely that any survivors will still be recovered from the rubble. Rescue operations have shifted focus to clearing debris and providing care for the affected population.
The disaster has overwhelmed local emergency services, and international aid has been requested. The Venezuelan government has mobilized military and civilian resources to assist in relief efforts. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, but the earthquakes are among the deadliest in the region's history. According to the report by Mehr News, the situation remains critical as aftershocks continue to pose risks to rescue workers and survivors.
