Iran FM urges UN to condemn US economic terrorism

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations to condemn the United States' so-called "Operation Economic Outcast," which he described as an illegal campaign of "economic terrorism" against Iran. In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the president of the Security Council, and UN member states, Araghchi urged the international community to take a stand against Washington's actions.

According to a post published on his Telegram channel on Wednesday, Araghchi wrote that the declared objective of the operation is to end lawful economic relations with Iran, backed by threats of secondary sanctions and exclusion from the US financial system. He argued that these measures seek to extend US laws and foreign-policy objectives beyond its jurisdiction and force sovereign states to alter their lawful trade relations.

Araghchi emphasized that a defining moment now confronts the Security Council and all members of the United Nations. He stated that they face a choice between defending sovereign equality, non-interference, and states' sovereign rights, or submitting to the unilateralism and bullying of a rogue state.

Iran also requested that Guterres assess and report on the humanitarian and human rights consequences of the US measures, including their impact on access to food, medicine, healthcare, energy, transportation, and humanitarian assistance. Furthermore, Araghchi said Iran reserves the right to pursue all available avenues for accountability, compensation, and redress over damages caused by the US campaign.

According to Mehr News Agency, the letter was sent in response to the Trump administration's renewed pressure campaign against Iran, which includes sanctions and efforts to isolate the country economically. The Iranian foreign minister's appeal comes amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, with Iran seeking international support against what it views as unlawful and coercive measures.
