UN chief Guterres calls for immediate Gaza ceasefire and full implementation of peace plan

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the full implementation of the Gaza peace plan, according to a statement carried by Mehr News. In a post on the social media platform X, Guterres said the international community must not forget what he described as the dramatic suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank.

The UN chief urged that the Gaza peace plan be fully carried out and that unrestricted humanitarian aid be allowed to enter the enclave. He described a ceasefire as the first step towards what he called a just, lasting and comprehensive peace.

Guterres also reiterated his long-standing position on the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict, stating that there will be no peace in the Middle East without the two-state solution. The remark places the ceasefire appeal within the framework of a permanent political settlement rather than a temporary halt to hostilities.

The statement comes amid continuing international attention on conditions in Gaza and the West Bank, where humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned of severe shortages of food, medicine and other basic supplies. UN officials have consistently pressed for expanded aid access and for the protection of civilians under international humanitarian law.

The appeal by the Secretary-General adds to a series of calls from UN bodies and member states for a halt to the fighting and for a negotiated path forward. It also reflects the UN's position that humanitarian relief and a political process should advance together.

Guterres has previously warned that the region stands at a critical juncture and has urged all parties to prioritize the protection of civilians. His latest remarks on X repeat that message and frame the ceasefire as a prerequisite for any wider diplomatic progress.

According to Mehr News, the UN chief's post included the call for the Gaza peace plan to be fully implemented, for unrestricted humanitarian aid to enter the enclave, and for a two-state solution as the only viable route to lasting peace in the Middle East.
