The United Nations has called for an end to Israeli air strikes on Syria, describing them as a violation of Syria's territorial integrity and airspace. In a press briefing on Tuesday, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said the strikes on the Abu al-Duhur military airport in Syria's eastern Idlib province mark "yet another very worrying violation" of Syria's sovereignty.
"These air strikes should stop, and we stand against them," Dujarric stated, responding to questions from journalists. The remarks come after Syria officially condemned the strikes in letters addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council.
The Abu al-Duhur airport has been a frequent target of Israeli attacks, which Israel claims are aimed at Iranian military positions and Hezbollah forces operating in Syria. However, the UN has repeatedly called for respect for Syria's territorial integrity and has urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate the conflict.
The Israeli regime has conducted numerous air strikes on Syrian territory over the past years, often targeting military installations and convoys. These actions have drawn international criticism, with the UN and several countries calling for restraint and adherence to international law.
According to the Mehr News Agency, the UN's latest statement underscores the growing concern over the repeated violations of Syrian airspace. The report by Mehr News Agency added that the UN's position remains consistent with its previous calls for a cessation of hostilities and a political solution to the Syrian crisis.
