Iran's judiciary-run Mizan news agency reported that two men, identified as Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raisi, were executed after their death sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court. They were convicted of involvement in the killing of four police officers in Isfahan during what the judiciary described as foreign-orchestrated acts of terrorism in the early part of the year.
According to the judiciary, Sepahi set a police officer on fire while the officer was still alive, while Raisi participated in attacks against security forces and encouraged violence. The two were convicted of using weapons to create fear and insecurity, "corruption on earth," inciting violence, and other national security offenses, Mizan further reported.
The executions were carried out following the Supreme Court's confirmation of the death sentences. The case relates to a period of unrest in Isfahan that Iranian authorities have characterized as foreign-backed riots. The judiciary's Mizan news agency provided the details of the convictions and the executions.
