Former US President Donald Trump claimed on Monday night that American negotiators were set to hold talks with Iran the following day, Tuesday, and that oil prices would fall to $60 per barrel. However, when no talks materialized, crude prices jumped above $70 per barrel. A review of oil price charts shows that prices later rose to over $74 per barrel.
Trump made the statement on his social media platform Truth Social, saying negotiations would be held in Doha, Qatar, and that his negotiator was heading to Qatar. This announcement caused a sharp decline in oil markets, with a barrel dropping below $70. However, within a few hours, the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmail Baghaei, and Qatari mediators denied any such talks, stating there was no program for negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
The incident is seen as an attempt by Trump to influence oil prices through false claims. According to a report by Fars News Agency, the denial from Iranian and Qatari officials quickly reversed the market trend, leading to a rebound in oil prices.
