Iran Deputy FM Says Three Islands Are Integral Part of Iranian Territory

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reiterated on Tuesday that the three islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb are an integral part of Iranian territory. In a post on his X account, Gharibabadi stated, "Repeating baseless claims regarding the Iranian islands, even from the podium of the General Assembly, does not alter the reality. Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb are an inseparable part of Iran's territory." He further emphasized that Emirati officials must adhere to the requirements of good neighborliness and the historical and legal realities of the region instead of repeating such claims.

Earlier, Iran's representative at the United Nations General Assembly, Nasser Asadi, affirmed Iran's sovereignty over the three islands. Speaking at a UN General Assembly session, Asadi said, "These islands have always been, are and will be an inseparable part of Iran's territory, and Iran's sovereignty over them is not negotiable." He categorically rejected any claims regarding the islands. Asadi also stressed that the name 'Persian Gulf' is the only correct geographical name for the body of water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula, noting that this name has been used since the beginning of history and is recognized by the United Nations system.

The statements come amid ongoing tensions over the islands, which the United Arab Emirates also claims. Iran has consistently maintained its sovereignty over the islands, citing historical and legal grounds. The Deputy Foreign Minister's remarks underscore Iran's firm position on the matter, dismissing any challenges to its territorial integrity.

According to Mehr News, the Iranian officials' comments reflect a unified stance against external claims, emphasizing the importance of respecting historical and legal realities in the region. The report added that Iran's sovereignty over the islands is non-negotiable and that any claims to the contrary are baseless.
