Nasser Asadi, representing Iran at a United Nations General Assembly session, stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran holds decisive and complete sovereignty over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb in the Persian Gulf. According to Asadi, these islands have always been, are, and will remain an inseparable part of Iran's territory, and Iran's sovereignty over them is not negotiable. He added that Iran categorically rejects any claim regarding these islands.

Asadi also emphasized that the name "Persian Gulf" is the only correct geographical designation for the body of water between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. He noted that this name has been used since the beginning of history and is recognized by the United Nations system. Iran's representative stressed that this name must be respected by all.

The statement comes amid longstanding disputes over the three islands. The United Arab Emirates has previously reiterated claims to Abu Musa and the two Tunb islands, while Iran has consistently maintained its sovereignty over them. The issue has been a point of tension in Iran-UAE relations.

According to Mehr News, Asadi's remarks at the UN General Assembly reaffirm Iran's position on both the territorial integrity of the islands and the naming of the Persian Gulf.
