Kabul will not allow anyone to use its territory to pose a threat to other countries, a Taliban spokesman emphasized on Monday. The statement comes amid ongoing concerns from neighboring countries and the international community about potential militant activities originating from Afghan soil.
Speaking to reporters, the spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said that the entire Afghanistan is under the control of the central government. He noted, "Since the Taliban returned to power, the security situation in Afghanistan has significantly improved." Mujahid's remarks were aimed at reassuring regional and global actors that Afghanistan will not become a launching pad for attacks against other nations.
Pakistan is among the countries that have accused the Taliban of interfering in its internal affairs. Islamabad has repeatedly raised concerns about cross-border terrorism and the presence of militant groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) operating from Afghan soil. The Taliban, however, deny these allegations and insist they are committed to preventing any such activities.
The statement also comes in the wake of recent attacks in Kabul, including a bombing that targeted a mosque, which the Taliban blamed on the Islamic State group. The Taliban have vowed to crack down on all militant groups that threaten Afghanistan's security or use its territory for external operations.
International observers have noted that while the security situation has improved in some areas, challenges remain, including economic instability and ongoing violence by extremist factions. The Taliban's commitment to not allowing Afghan soil to be used against others is seen as a key condition for international recognition and aid.
According to Mehr News Agency, the Taliban spokesman's comments were made during a press briefing in Kabul. The report by Mehr News added that the Taliban have consistently maintained this position since taking power in August 2021, but regional countries remain skeptical, demanding concrete actions rather than verbal assurances.
