Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Hamidreza Hajibabaei said on Monday that the parliament will not back down one step from the people’s and the leadership’s demands regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at an open session of the Parliament held virtually, he stated, "Everyone should know that (the management of) the Strait of Hormuz will be determined based on the will of the Iranian people and leadership and based on the approval of the Parliament." He added, "Whatever the people want, the Parliament will insist on it and will not back down from it."
Hajibabaei also addressed the role of the United States in the region, asserting that the US must not be allowed to fight whenever it wants and declare a ceasefire whenever it wants. "The Islamic Republic of Iran must stand strong against America’s demands and not let America be an active player in the region," he said.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes. Iran has long asserted its rights over the strait, which is within its territorial waters. The remarks come amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States over various issues, including nuclear negotiations and regional influence.
According to Mehr News Agency, Hajibabaei's statements underscore the Iranian Parliament's commitment to protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The report added that the parliament will continue to support the leadership's stance on the strait.
