According to Yemeni armed forces media, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the military spokesman for the Sanaa government, announced the shooting down of a Saudi "Wing Loong 2" drone. The incident occurred on Sunday morning while the drone was reportedly carrying out hostile missions in the sky of Taiz province.
Saree stated that the drone was targeted with a proportionate weapon and successfully shot down. He said: "With the help of God Almighty, the Yemeni armed forces targeted and shot down a Saudi enemy's 'Wing Loong 2' armed spy drone during a hostile mission this morning over the northwest of Maqbaneh in Taiz province with an appropriate weapon."
The Wing Loong 2 is an armed reconnaissance drone developed by China, which has been used by several countries, including Saudi Arabia. The downing of the drone is part of the ongoing conflict in Yemen, where the Sanaa government forces have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition since 2015.
This incident adds to the series of drone interceptions and attacks reported in the region. The Yemeni forces have previously claimed to have shot down several coalition drones, including American-made MQ-9 Reapers and Chinese-made Wing Loong drones.
According to Mehr News Agency, the report was published on their website, citing Yemeni armed forces media. The exact details of the weapon used were not specified, but the term "appropriate weapon" suggests a surface-to-air missile or other anti-aircraft system.
The conflict in Yemen has seen numerous such incidents, with both sides claiming successes in downing enemy aircraft and drones. The Saudi-led coalition has not yet officially commented on this specific incident.
