Saudi airstrikes target Sana'a airport after passenger flight

Saudi airstrikes struck Sana'a International Airport on Monday, according to initial reports, in what appears to be a sharp escalation of the ongoing conflict in Yemen. The bombardment occurred in several successive waves, directly following a high-stakes challenge to the decade-and-a-half-long aerial blockade of Yemen. Official details regarding infrastructure damage or casualties have not yet been released.

Eyewitnesses in the capital reported that the strikes were preceded by the arrival of a commercial passenger aircraft that landed at Sana'a International Airport at 9:00 AM local time on Monday and departed an hour later. The flight, originating from Tehran, underscores the ongoing tensions between Iran and the Saudi-led coalition.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesman for the Yemeni armed forces, issued a statement condemning the attacks and vowing retaliation. "The Yemeni military will retaliate the Saudi attacks," Saree said. Prior to this incident, the Yemeni armed forces had stressed that they would keep flights between Tehran and Sanaa open, vowing to target Saudi vital facilities in response to any aggression.

The airstrikes mark a significant escalation in the conflict, which has seen a fragile ceasefire in recent months. The Saudi-led coalition has maintained a strict aerial blockade of Yemen, particularly targeting Houthi-controlled areas, including the capital Sanaa. The arrival of the commercial flight from Tehran was seen as a direct challenge to this blockade.

According to Mehr News, the timing of the strikes points to heightened friction over maritime and airspace control. The report by Mehr News added that the Yemeni military has previously warned of retaliatory actions against Saudi Arabia if the blockade is violated. The international community has called for restraint, but the situation remains tense.
