Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has reiterated Moscow's solidarity with and support for Cuba amid what he described as unprecedented external pressure on the Cuban people. The statement came in a message addressed to Raul Castro, a leader of the Cuban Revolution, on the occasion of his 95th birthday on Wednesday.
In the message, Lavrov praised Castro's life as an outstanding example of unwavering dedication to his country, his people, and the ideals of the Cuban Revolution. He noted that for millions of people around the world, Castro remains a symbol of resilience, courage, love for the country, and indomitable will.
"Given the unprecedented external pressure the Cuban people are facing, we would like to reiterate our steadfast solidarity with and support for your country," Lavrov emphasized, according to a report by TASS.
The message underscores the continued close ties between Russia and Cuba, as Moscow has consistently backed Havana against U.S. sanctions and other international pressures. The birthday greeting also highlights the personal respect Lavrov holds for Castro, who stepped down as president in 2018 but remains a key figure in Cuban politics.
According to Mehr News, the Russian foreign minister's message was delivered through diplomatic channels and reflects the broader strategic partnership between the two nations. Russia has been a vocal supporter of Cuba in international forums, opposing embargoes and calling for normalized relations.
