Qatari LNG carrier transits Strait of Hormuz via Iran-designated route

A Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier has successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz using a route designated by Iranian authorities, according to a report by Mehr News. The vessel passed without incident and is now heading toward international waters.

The transit occurred after Tehran announced three weeks ago that maritime passage through the strategic waterway would require Iranian approval. The decision followed accusations by Iran that the United States had violated a previous understanding regarding navigation in the strait.

This is the first Qatari LNG shipment to cross the Strait of Hormuz since the new restrictions were introduced. The strait is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, with about 20% of the world's oil and LNG passing through it.

The development highlights ongoing tensions in the region, particularly involving Iran, the US, and Gulf states. Qatar, which shares the world's largest gas field with Iran, has maintained diplomatic ties with Tehran despite pressures from other Gulf nations.

According to Mehr News, the Qatari vessel's passage was coordinated with Iranian authorities and followed the designated route without any issues. The report did not specify the name of the vessel or its cargo capacity.
