According to Al Jazeera, Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman, Majed al-Ansari, said that Qatar is hopeful that an agreement between the United States and Iran will be reached in the coming hours or days. He stated that Qatar is particularly supporting Oman's mediation efforts in this regard.
Al-Ansari confirmed that no direct talks are currently taking place between the two parties, but mediators are communicating with each other. He added that drafts of agreements are being exchanged, as they have been since the conflict began in February.
The spokesman emphasized that the mediators' focus right now is on avoiding escalation, reopening the Strait of Hormuz, and reopening the door for diplomacy between the parties. He expressed concern about a major escalation in the region, saying, "What we do not want to see right now is a major escalation in our region."
Al-Ansari also noted that Qatar is working closely with its partners in the region and with the parties of the conflict to reach a diplomatic resolution. He said, "We are working very closely with our partners in the region and with the parties of the conflict to reach a diplomatic resolution."
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, al-Ansari stated that Qatar believes the issue should be decided by the region itself. The report by Mehr News, citing Al Jazeera, added that Qatar's comments come amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran over the strait and other issues.
