Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Yerevan, Armenia, on Friday to participate in an international summit on biodiversity. The summit brings together heads of state and government from various countries. According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, President Pezeshkian is also scheduled to hold talks and exchange views with some of the participating leaders on the sidelines of the event.
Baghaei provided context on the significance of the convention, stating that the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity was established in 1992 and currently has 196 parties. He noted that all countries except the United States are parties to the convention. Iran, he said, was among the original signatories and officially became a party in 1996. Over the past three decades, Iran has played an important role in developing mechanisms and rules for protecting biodiversity and the environment.
The spokesman also highlighted the environmental damage inflicted on Iran and the wider region during what he described as military aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran. He did not provide further details on the extent of the damage or specific incidents.
The summit in Armenia serves as a platform for international cooperation on biodiversity and environmental protection. President Pezeshkian's participation underscores Iran's continued engagement with multilateral environmental agreements despite regional tensions. The meetings on the sidelines are expected to address bilateral issues and regional developments.
According to Mehr News, the visit reflects Iran's active role in global environmental discussions and its interest in strengthening ties with neighboring countries.
