Israeli forces shell towns in southern Lebanon despite June ceasefire

Israeli forces shelled the towns of Mansouri and Majdal Zoun and opened machine-gun fire on the Al-Hujair and Al-Salouqi valleys in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon, Lebanon's National News Agency reported. The agency said the attacks are part of daily strikes that have continued despite a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon brokered by the United States in June.

According to the report, Israeli forces continue to occupy about six percent of Lebanese territory, from where they carry out attacks and systematically demolish homes. The National News Agency did not provide details on casualties or the extent of damage in the latest shelling.

The United Nations estimates that some 329,686 people remain displaced inside Lebanon as a result of the continuing hostilities. The displacement figure reflects the toll of repeated strikes and demolitions in the south of the country.

The June ceasefire, mediated by the United States, was intended to halt fighting between Israel and Lebanon. The reported shelling and gunfire indicate that violations are being recorded on a near-daily basis, according to Lebanese officials and the state news agency.

Mehr News, citing the National News Agency, reported that the attacks on Mansouri, Majdal Zoun and the two valleys took place in the Tyre district, one of the areas most affected by the ongoing confrontation. The report added that the strikes come amid the continued Israeli occupation of parts of southern Lebanon and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of residents.

According to Mehr News, the National News Agency's account underscores that the daily attacks persist despite the US-brokered ceasefire, with Israeli forces maintaining their presence in about six percent of Lebanese territory and continuing to demolish homes while some 329,686 people remain displaced inside the country, according to UN figures.
