Iran's Ambassador to the United Nations, Saeed Iravani, sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council President on Monday, marking the 44th anniversary of the abduction of four Iranian diplomats in Lebanon by Israeli-affiliated forces. The diplomats—Seyyed Mohsen Mousavi (Chargé d'Affaires), Ahmad Motevaselian (Military Attaché), Taghi Rastegar Moghadam (technical staff), and Kazem Akhavan (journalist)—were taken on July 5, 1982, during Israel's invasion and occupation of Beirut.
Iravani described the abduction as a premeditated and unlawful act, violating the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and constituting terrorism under the 1979 International Convention Against the Taking of Hostages. He noted that Israel's continued refusal to disclose the fate of the diplomats amounts to a continuing enforced disappearance, causing prolonged suffering to their families.
The ambassador also referenced a March 8, 2026, attack in Beirut that killed six Iranian diplomats, calling it a deliberate terrorist act. He cited Iran's previous communications to the UN detailing these violations. Iravani stated that Israel's persistent disregard for international law, including the UN Charter and Vienna Conventions, poses a direct threat to international peace and security.
Iran holds Israel and its enablers fully responsible for the abduction and assassination of its diplomats and will pursue accountability through all international legal and diplomatic mechanisms. According to Mehr News, the letter underscores Iran's commitment to addressing these violations.
