SaveIRGC Denies Direct US-Iran Communication Channel on Hormuz Strait
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has strongly denied reports suggesting the existence of a direct communication channel between Iran and the United States regarding the Strait of Hormuz. IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Mohebbi took to social media to address the claims, stating that they are "categorically false" and "strongly rejected." He emphasized, "This has not happened and will not happen. The Strait of Hormuz is Iranian territory and has no connection whatsoever with America."
The denial comes amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States over the strategic waterway, through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes. The Strait of Hormuz has been a focal point of geopolitical friction, with Iran frequently asserting its control over the passage. Previous incidents have included the seizure of oil tankers and confrontations between Iranian naval forces and the US Navy.
Reports of a potential direct line had emerged in some media outlets, suggesting efforts to de-escalate tensions. However, the IRGC's firm rejection underscores Tehran's stance that any discussions regarding the Strait of Hormuz are a matter of national sovereignty. The IRGC, which oversees Iran's maritime security in the Persian Gulf, has consistently opposed any foreign interference in the region.
The United States has not officially commented on the alleged communication channel. The Pentagon and US Central Command have maintained a policy of not discussing operational details publicly. Analysts suggest that while backchannel communications have occurred in the past, the IRGC's public denial may reflect internal divisions or a strategic message to both domestic and international audiences.
According to Mehr News, the IRGC spokesman's statement leaves no room for ambiguity, reaffirming Iran's position that the Strait of Hormuz remains under exclusive Iranian jurisdiction. The report added that any claims to the contrary are baseless and part of a disinformation campaign.
