Iraqi President Condemns US-Saudi Airstrikes on PMU Positions

Iraqi President Nizar Amedi issued a strongly worded statement on Tuesday condemning the aerial assaults by the United States and Saudi Arabia on positions of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), also known as Hashd al-Sha'abi. The statement described the attacks as "an unacceptable act, a flagrant violation of Iraqi sovereignty, and entirely contrary to international law and the United Nations Charter."

The presidency reiterated Iraq's vehement opposition to the use of its soil or military fields to launch attacks against neighboring countries. It called on all parties to respect Iraq's sovereignty and refrain from any action that undermines its security and stability. The statement further emphasized that dialogue is essential to resolving crises in a manner that preserves regional security and keeps nations away from further tensions.

Hashd al-Sha'abi reported that its positions in the provinces of Baghdad, Wasit, Nineveh, Basra, Kirkuk, Karbala, and Diyala were targeted early on Wednesday. The attacks caused material damage to headquarters, vehicles, and military equipment. The anti-terror resistance force described the attacks as a "dangerous escalation," a "violation of Iraq's sovereignty," and an attack against the country's official security institutions.

The PMU stated that specialized committees were continuing field operations to establish more accurate figures and information, noting that the number of those killed and wounded could rise. According to Mehr News, the Iraqi president's condemnation highlights the ongoing tensions in the region and the complex dynamics involving US and Saudi military actions in Iraq.
