Iraq holds special place in Iran's relations, Leader's aide tells PUK head

Ali Akbar Velayati, international affairs adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, met with Bafel Talabani, head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), in Tehran on Tuesday afternoon. The two discussed bilateral relations between Iran and Iraq as well as regional developments, according to Mehr News.

During the meeting, Velayati welcomed Talabani's visit and said Iraq has always held a special place in Iran's relations. He stated that both countries must be careful not to act in a way that provokes the greed of some countries, specifically naming the American and Zionist regimes. He added that Iran and Iraq, as two powerful neighbouring countries, can overcome all problems together.

Talabani, for his part, expressed the friendship and solidarity of the Iraqi people with Iran. He said his presence in Iran and his meeting with Velayati were intended to convey the message that "we will always stand by you." He described Velayati as a well-known figure not only in Iraq but in the world, and said Velayati had the greatest impact on bilateral relations. Talabani noted that Velayati's friendship with the late Jalal Talabani had been a solid foundation for relations between Iran, Iraq and the Kurdistan region.

He further noted that some events caused by certain individuals stemmed from inattention to sensitive global conditions, which the Islamic Republic handles with prudence. Talabani said, "We are certain that others, of any nationality or ethnicity, come and go, but what remains is the neighbourliness between Iraq and Iran, which will last forever. This is a great asset and support in the relations between the two countries."

The meeting underscores ongoing diplomatic engagement between Iran and Iraq, including the Kurdistan region, amid regional tensions. Velayati's remarks referenced concerns about external interference, while Talabani emphasized enduring neighbourly ties.
