Iran says US election result shows public backlash over war

An analysis published by Mehr News examined the political fallout in the United States following the war with Iran, arguing that the conflict was a central factor in the Republican Party's electoral defeat. According to the report, many global media outlets, particularly in the United States, identified President Donald Trump's military action against Iran as the main reason for the Republican loss and described Iran as a key factor behind the Democrats' victory. Trump, the report said, sent a congratulatory message to the Democrats after his party's defeat and acknowledged that the war with Iran had contributed to the failure, while also alluding to the possible use of his veto power against Democratic initiatives and stating that ending the war ultimately rests on his personal decision.

The analysis listed several factors it said contributed to the enemy's defeat: the guidance of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, resistance by the Iranian people against what it described as US and Israeli aggression, national unity, the conduct of Iran's armed forces on the battlefronts including the management of the Strait of Hormuz, and coordination among the branches of the system and the armed forces. It said these factors also deepened American public aversion toward Trump. While Western media, particularly those affiliated with the Republican Party, attributed the defeat to economic discontent, rising living costs driven by fuel prices, high Democratic turnout and a decline in Trump's popularity, the report argued that these issues stemmed directly from the US action against Iran and that Republicans might otherwise have won.

The report cautioned against assuming that a Democratic victory signals a fundamental shift in US policy toward Iran, drawing a distinction between Democratic opposition to continuing the war and any support for the interests of the Islamic Republic. It cited a June 3, 2026 House of Representatives vote of 215 to 208 in favor of a resolution limiting Trump's war powers, and a February 2026 Chicago Council on Global Affairs poll in which 85 percent of Democrats supported a diplomatic agreement to end the conflict while 28 percent favored airstrikes on Iran's nuclear facilities. It noted that Trump remains Commander-in-Chief and could take new military action, and said Iran's armed forces should maintain readiness.

The analysis further said that although Democrats oppose the use of US military force against Iran, their views align with Republicans on Iran's nuclear program, sanctions and financial concessions. It said both parties share concerns over Iran's regional power and nuclear program but differ on approach, and that they agree on ensuring the security of the Zionist regime, countering the Axis of Resistance, securing US strategic interests in West Asia, maintaining economic leverage over Tehran, supporting regional allies and keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. It added that the approach toward Iran will be a decisive factor in US politics through the 2028 presidential election, with Democrats likely to maintain an anti-war stance and Republicans, gradually distancing themselves from Trump, potentially grooming a moderate figure such as Vice President J.D. Vance. The report said this could present an opportunity for Iranian diplomacy to leverage military strength and popular support to secure national interests. According to Mehr News, the analysis was published by the outlet.
