Iran celebrates Al-Khwarizmi Day, honoring father of algebra

Iran observes the Day of Kharazmi, also known as Information Technology Day, honoring the legacy of Abu Jafar Mohammad Ibn Mousa Khwarazmi, a 9th-century scholar born in Khwarazm. Al-Khwarizmi revolutionized mathematics with his systematic approach to solving equations, laying the groundwork for algebra. His Latinized name, Algoritmi, inspired the word "algorithm," a cornerstone of modern computing. He also authored influential works on astronomy and geography, pioneered methods for solving linear and quadratic equations, and introduced the Hindu-Arabic numeral system and positional decimal notation to Europe, replacing Roman numerals. Al-Khwarizmi compiled a world map based on Ptolemaic coordinates and wrote on celestial movements. UNESCO honored his impact in 1983, declaring the 1500th anniversary of his death. His legacy is championed through the Khwarizmi International Award, established in 1987 by the Iranian Research Organization for Science and Technology, which promotes innovation and scientific achievement. The annual International Khwarazmi Festival in Iran recognizes inventors, entrepreneurs, and researchers across six competitive sections. According to Mehr News Agency, Al-Khwarizmi's insights continue to resonate in the digital age.
