Iran's Parliament spokesman Mohammad Ebrahim Rezaei has warned US President Donald Trump over his claims to seize the Strait of Hormuz, according to Mehr News Agency.
Rezaei, who serves on the Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, made the remarks in response to Trump's recent statements. He mocked Trump's reported secret flight from Turkey to Britain last month, which was allegedly prompted by an assassination threat. The White House had said Trump was flying aboard Air Force One, but reports suggest he actually departed on a secret military flight.
Rezaei said, "Turning to his hiding in food truck at the airport for fear of being assassinated, he stated that Trump's clothes still smell like airplane food, and yet he claims to have seized the Strait of Hormuz!"
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway through which about 20% of global oil passes. Iran has repeatedly warned that it could disrupt shipping through the strait in response to threats or sanctions. Trump's claims to seize the strait have been met with skepticism and criticism from Iranian officials.
The Mehr News Agency report did not provide further details on the context of Trump's claims or the specific threats he made. However, tensions between Iran and the United States have been high, with both sides engaging in verbal sparring and military posturing.
According to Mehr News Agency, Rezaei's comments highlight Iran's readiness to defend its territorial waters and its opposition to any foreign intervention in the region. The report added that Iran's Parliament has been closely monitoring US actions and will respond appropriately to any threats.
