Gholamhossein Darzi, the Islamic Republic's ambassador and chargé d'affaires to the United Nations, has written to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the president of the Security Council, urging them to condemn a US attack on a wedding party in southern Iran. The appeal follows a wave of American strikes on southern Iranian cities that have killed at least 18 people and wounded 108 others.
In his letter, Darzi described the circumstances of the attack, noting that a residential home in Kouhestak, Sirik County, Hormozgan Province, was struck while a wedding celebration was taking place. He wrote: "The Islamic Republic strongly condemns this horrific and appalling crime," adding that "the deliberate targeting and killing of civilians, including children, constitutes a grave violation of the fundamental rules of international humanitarian law and amounts to a war crime."
Darzi said the Kouhestak incident was part of a broader pattern of US and Israeli attacks against civilian sites across Iran. The letter noted that since February 28, US attacks had repeatedly targeted civilians and critical infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, airports, residential areas, bridges, roads, and railway facilities.
The letter also cited a February 28 attack on a primary school in the city of Minab, Hormozgan Province. According to the letter, more than 168 students, predominantly girls aged seven to 12, as well as teachers and school staff, were martyred, while another 110 people sustained injuries.
The report by Mehr News Agency (MNA) added that the letter was sent on Wednesday, following the latest attacks. The envoy's appeal underscores Iran's position that such attacks constitute violations of international law and calls for international action.
