Iran Urges International Action to Prosecute Those Behind Nasrallah's Killing

Iran's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Sunday marking the second anniversary of the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, calling for international action to prosecute those responsible. The statement, reported by Press TV, described the attack that killed Nasrallah as a "heinous and unforgivable crime" committed by what it termed Israeli terrorists during an operation in Lebanon. The ministry said the passage of time and the accumulation of crimes would not diminish the demand for justice and the punishment of the perpetrators.

The statement also honored Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, an Iranian commander killed alongside Nasrallah, and reiterated Iran's position on Lebanon. It described Lebanon as a neighboring country facing an "occupying and terrorist entity" and affirmed Iran's support for Lebanon's independence, territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national unity. Iran views a strong, independent Lebanon capable of defending its people and territory as a pillar of stability and sustainable security for the region.

The ministry praised Nasrallah's three decades of leadership of the Lebanese resistance against Israeli aggression and occupation, calling it an "unparalleled example of courage, insight, wisdom and strength." It said his legacy would remain in the minds and culture of the people of Lebanon and the region. According to the statement, people in Lebanon, the region, and the world are increasingly recognizing that confronting occupation and warmongering requires the continuation of what it called dignified resistance.

The statement also honored other figures it described as martyrs of the path of resistance, including Iran's Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and Major General Mohammed Abdulkarim al-Ghamari, Chief of the General Staff of the Yemeni Armed Forces.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah was killed on September 27, 2024, in a large Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburb of Dahiyeh, an area with a strong Hezbollah presence. The strike targeted several residential buildings in the Haret Hreik area using bunker-buster munitions. Hezbollah confirmed his death the following day. According to Mehr News, the Foreign Ministry's statement reiterated Iran's call for accountability and its support for Lebanon.
