Esmaeil Kowsari, a member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said in an interview with Mehr News Agency that Iran will lodge a complaint against the United States over what he described as an illegal naval blockade. He said the Foreign Ministry and the Judiciary in Iran carry the primary responsibility in that regard.
Kowsari also noted that international bodies have the legal jurisdiction to sue the US over the blockade of Iran, but said they have not lived up to their commitments. The senior lawmaker called on the Iranian Judiciary to document the negative impact of the US blockade on the livelihood and health of Iranians in order to pursue legal action against what he termed the aggressor.
The lawmaker's remarks were reported by Mehr News Agency, which identified him as a member of the parliamentary commission and carried his comments in an interview. The report did not specify a timeline for the planned complaint or name the international bodies Kowsari referred to.
According to Mehr News, Kowsari's statement focused on the legal avenues available to Iran and on the role of the Foreign Ministry and the Judiciary in preparing the case. The report added that he urged the Judiciary to document the effects of the blockade on Iranians' daily lives and health as part of the effort to bring a complaint against the United States.
