Iran summons German ambassador over repeated security allegations

Iran summoned Germany's ambassador on October 19, 2026, in response to what Tehran described as repeated security-related allegations made by German officials. According to Mehr News, Ambassador Dittmann was called in by Alireza Yousefi, Assistant Foreign Minister and Director General for Western Europe, who conveyed the Islamic Republic's strong objection to what he called the inappropriate approach adopted by some German officials toward Iran.

Yousefi said that making security-related allegations against Iran had long been a tactic employed by the Israeli regime and some Western countries. He also criticized the German judiciary, stating that providing judicial cover for baseless political claims would not lend credibility to such allegations but would instead undermine the credibility of Germany's judicial system. He further asserted that German officials' attempts to implicate Iran were aimed at diverting attention from the German government's responsibility for supporting and participating in what he described as US-Israeli military aggression against Iran. Yousefi emphasized that such tactics would not deter Iran from pursuing Germany's international responsibility for its participation in war crimes allegedly committed during that aggression. The German ambassador said he would convey Iran's concerns to the relevant authorities in his country.

Separately, Germany's Foreign Ministry summoned Iran's ambassador on Monday over allegations of an attempted attack against a leader of one of the country's Jewish communities. In a post on the social media platform X, the German Foreign Ministry said it would not tolerate attacks against Jewish residents and strongly condemned what it described as Iran's actions. A few days earlier, a court in Germany sentenced two men to prison over alleged plans to attack prominent pro-Israeli figures and spy on Jewish people on behalf of Iran's intelligence services.

The exchange of summonses marks a further downturn in relations between Berlin and Tehran. Iran has repeatedly rejected accusations that it conducts covert operations on German soil, while Germany has pressed concerns over the treatment of Jewish residents and alleged Iranian intelligence activity. The two governments have not announced any immediate follow-up measures following the reciprocal summonings.

According to Mehr News, the Iranian Foreign Ministry framed the summoning as a formal protest against allegations it considers unfounded and politically motivated, while the German Foreign Ministry presented its own summoning of Iran's ambassador as a response to a specific alleged plot. The report by Mehr News added that the German ambassador undertook to pass Iran's concerns on to his government.
