Iran criticises German foreign minister's remarks on Israel's attack on Iran

Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh criticised the German foreign minister over remarks that he said sought to justify Israel's military assault on Iran, in a post on his X account reported by Mehr News Agency.

Baghaei wrote that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had earlier enthusiastically declared that Israel was doing "our dirty work" with its attack on Iran. He added that a few months later the same chancellor laments that the war is costing the European economy 100 billion euros. Baghaei said the foreign minister now also feels compelled to justify the military assault on Iran.

In his post, Baghaei said the German foreign minister is marked by indifference and what he described as profound moral decay, arguing that he neither acknowledges the human casualties and war crimes committed nor grasps the economic damage the war inflicts on his own country and Europe.

Baghaei cited a German proverb, "From harm one becomes wise," and added that Hans Guck-in-die-Luft, a figure from German children's literature known for failing to look where he is going, appears to be unteachable.

The remarks are the latest in a series of exchanges between Iranian officials and European governments over the conflict. According to Mehr News Agency, Baghaei made the comments in a post on his X account.
