Iran spokesperson criticizes Western states for shielding US from accountability

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei Hamaneh said on X that remarks by US President Donald Trump about the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding show Washington's disregard for diplomacy, according to Mehr News. Baghaei wrote that Trump's admission that he never believed in the Islamabad MoU and considered it a waste of time exposes what he called the hollowness of US diplomatic commitments.

The spokesperson said such conduct is not new for Iran, stating that Washington has a long record of reneging on its commitments and treating international obligations as disposable when they become inconvenient. He added that there is no justification for European states and other defenders of Washington to continue what he described as whitewashing US misconduct and shielding it from accountability.

Baghaei further said that broken commitments cannot be excused, that international law cannot be applied selectively, and that political messaging cannot absolve Washington of accountability. The remarks were posted on the social media platform X and reported by Mehr News.

The statement did not specify which commitments or incidents it was referring to beyond the Islamabad MoU mentioned by the US president. It also did not name the European states it addressed. The comments come amid ongoing public exchanges between Iranian officials and Western governments over compliance with international agreements.
