Iran's High Council for Human Rights issued a statement on Friday condemning a US attack on water facilities in southern Iran. The attack caused damage to critical infrastructure responsible for supplying and distributing drinking water in several regions, including Sirik County in Hormozgan Province, according to a Press TV report on Saturday.
The statement emphasized that water supply facilities serving civilian needs are protected under international law and should not be targeted. Damage to such infrastructure could have broad and long-lasting consequences for public health, sanitation, human security, and daily life.
The council stressed that access to safe and sufficient drinking water is a fundamental human right recognized under international human rights standards and UN interpretations. Any military action that disrupts or deprives civilians of access to drinking water constitutes a serious violation of those rights.
Citing the principle of distinction under international humanitarian law, the council noted that attacks on water-related infrastructure, regardless of justification, are inconsistent with these obligations and violate international commitments. The statement expressed concern for vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with medical conditions, and called on UN human rights mechanisms to examine the humanitarian implications.
The council asserted that the United States bears international responsibility for the damage and should be held accountable, providing compensation in accordance with international legal principles. According to Mehr News Agency, the statement highlighted that Washington must face consequences for its actions.
