Iran reaffirms commitment to counterterrorism at UN conference

Addressing the Fourth United Nations Counter-terrorism Conference in New York on June 30, Iran's Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Gholam Hossein Darzi, said the Islamic Republic has remained at the forefront of regional and international efforts to combat terrorism. He emphasized Iran's crucial role in defeating terrorist groups such as ISIS in the region, noting that without the sacrifices of people like General Qassem Soleimani, ISIS would have expanded its scourge beyond the region. Darzi warned that despite ISIS's territorial defeat, the threat of resurgence persists as the group continues attacks against security forces and civilians. He criticized the unlawful presence and material support of foreign forces, especially the United States, which he accused of creating and supporting ISIS. Darzi expressed concern over foreign intervention undermining counter-terrorism efforts for political objectives. He highlighted Iran's hosting of the AALCO Regional Conference on Preventing and Countering Terrorism in Tehran on July 3-4, 2024, with participation from member states and organizations including UNODC, SCO, and the African Union. Domestically, Iran has amended laws on countering terrorism financing and money laundering, and acceded to the International Convention for Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism in October 2025. Darzi stressed the importance of transparency in the UN conference process and warned against its misuse for political objectives or justifying acts of genocide. He reaffirmed Iran's commitment to counterterrorism and the role of the UN in promoting multilateralism. According to Mehr News, the speech was delivered at the UN conference.
