Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated during a weekly press briefing on Monday that Iran does not collect tolls in the Strait of Hormuz and emphasized the need for precision in terminology. He clarified that Iran is not seeking to impose charges, and that the joint efforts with Oman to draft a protocol for safe passage of ships constitute a responsible measure. Baghaei noted that services provided within this process, as well as environmental protection efforts, naturally require costs.
Responding to a question from Tasnim about British and French plans related to the management of the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei asserted that no country other than Iran and Oman is present in the strait. He stated that it is the responsibility of Iran and Oman to formulate the mechanism for safe passage, and the two littoral countries are currently working on that process. He added that scattered measures being undertaken by others are complicating the situation, and Iran is in contact with all parties to implement a navigation mechanism as quickly as possible.
Commenting on a visit by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi to Oman for consultations regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei said Iran understands that the security of the strait is a concern for the entire world. This makes Iran's responsibility as a coastal state even heavier, as Tehran must consider both its own security concerns and those of the international community. Baghaei added that the reason Iran and Oman are seeking an effective mechanism for safe passage is their belief that the waterway should remain usable for the entire world.
He attributed recent developments to lawbreaking by the United States and the Zionist regime following their war of aggression against Iran. He concluded that every responsible country welcomes the establishment of a reliable mechanism for maritime navigation. According to Mehr News, Baghaei's remarks underscore Iran's commitment to maintaining security in the Strait of Hormuz while rejecting unilateral actions by other nations.
