The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has signed an agreement with Russia to purchase 20 helicopters, aimed at strengthening the country's logistics and aerial rescue fleet. The deal was finalized on Wednesday at the headquarters of the Russian state-owned enterprise Russian Helicopters, with IRCS President Pir-Hossein Koulivand and Russian Helicopters Director General Nikolay Kolesov signing the agreement.
Speaking to a correspondent in Moscow after the signing ceremony, Koulivand described the deal as an unprecedented milestone in the history of the Iranian Red Crescent Society. He stated that the contract for the first four helicopters has already been finalized, with delivery expected before the Persian New Year (Nowruz) in March 2027. The remaining helicopters will be delivered in subsequent phases.
Koulivand expressed appreciation for the coordination efforts of the Iranian Embassy in Russia and the parliamentary support from the Islamic Consultative Assembly. He detailed the technical capabilities of the new fleet, noting that the helicopters are equipped with modern technology and night-vision systems, enabling night flight operations. Additionally, they are outfitted for firefighting operations as well as providing medical and emergency rescue services.
The agreement marks a significant step in Iran-Russia cooperation in the aviation and emergency response sectors. According to Mehr News, the deal is expected to enhance Iran's disaster response capabilities and improve its aerial rescue infrastructure.
