Iran's FM Araghchi meets Azerbaijani counterpart, reaffirms sovereignty stance

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on Tuesday afternoon in New York, on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly session. The meeting was part of Araghchi's ongoing consultations with representatives of various countries attending the UN gathering.

During the talks, the two top diplomats exchanged views on bilateral relations between Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan, as well as on regional and international developments. They reviewed the agreements and understandings previously reached between the two countries across various economic and trade fields. Issues related to security and cooperation in the South Caucasus region were also discussed.

Both sides emphasized their determination to implement the existing agreements and to strengthen cooperation and coordination in the interest of both nations. Araghchi provided an explanation of the latest developments in the Persian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed Iran's determination to defend its sovereignty and national interests against what he described as U.S. and Israeli aggression and illegal pressure.

The meeting comes amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing diplomatic activity at the UN General Assembly, where Iran has been engaging with multiple counterparts. The discussions with Azerbaijan focused on practical steps to advance bilateral economic and trade ties, alongside security coordination in the South Caucasus.

According to Mehr News, the two foreign ministers underscored the importance of continued dialogue and the implementation of mutual understandings. The report added that Araghchi's consultations in New York are part of Iran's broader diplomatic outreach during the UN session.
