The Islamic Republic of Iran's chairmanship of the 11th session of the Hydrographic Commission of the ROPME Maritime Region has been confirmed. This achievement was highlighted during the 24th Session of the Capacity Development Subcommittee (CDSC24) and the 18th Session of the Interregional Coordination Committee (IRCC18) of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), held both in person and via videoconference in Lima, Peru, in June 2026.
The General Directorate of Maritime Safety and Security of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO), which serves as the Chairman of the ROPME Sea Area Hydrographic Commission (RSAHC), attended these meetings virtually. The directorate also acts as the coordinator of educational activities and the coordinator of paper and electronic nautical charts for the region. The meetings represented nine member countries: Iran, Oman, Pakistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
In addition to confirming Iran's chairmanship, the sessions approved the committee's new strategic plan for the years 2027 to 2032. These outcomes are considered significant achievements for Iran's active participation in international maritime cooperation and hydrographic coordination. According to Mehr News, the developments underscore Iran's role in enhancing maritime security and capacity development within the ROPME region.
