Iran among 30 countries with technology to preserve rare blood types, IBTO says

Ahmad Gharehbaghian, Chief Executive of the Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO), said Iran is among the 30 countries that possess the technology for the long-term preservation of rare blood types, according to Mehr News. He explained that rare blood types are blood groups with a very low prevalence in society and are categorized into three classes: rare, very rare, and extremely rare.

Gharehbaghian said the IBTO identifies these blood types, collects the corresponding samples, and preserves them through a freezing process. According to published scientific literature, he noted, the storage duration for such blood ranges from 10 to 30 years. He added that documentation indicates blood stored in a frozen state for more than 20 years remains suitable for use.

The IBTO chief stated that stocks of rare blood types must be continuously maintained. Individuals with rare blood types are identified through various methods and invited to blood transfusion centers to donate, provided they meet the necessary criteria. Like other donors, he said, they can donate blood up to four times a year.

The remarks were reported by Mehr News, which carried the IBTO statement on the preservation and management of rare blood stocks in Iran.
