India demonstrates multi-layered ballistic missile defense capability

India has demonstrated a multi-layered ballistic missile defense (BMD) capability through three consecutive flight tests conducted on June 10 and 11, according to a statement by the Ministry of Defense. The tests were carried out from Chandipur in India's eastern Orissa state.

The statement said the interceptors successfully engaged their respective targets, showcasing the country's ability to address emerging missile threats. It added that these tests place India in an elite group of nations with BMD capability to engage up to Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs). However, the statement did not specify the range of the targets engaged.

Currently, only a handful of countries, including the United States, Russia, China, and Israel, possess highly advanced missile defense systems. India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh posted on X that "Multi-layered BMD capability was successfully demonstrated."

Analysts noted that the tested technologies could strengthen India's missile deterrent capabilities, particularly as it faces missile threats from its two nuclear-armed neighbors, Pakistan and China. Unresolved border disputes have triggered military tensions with both countries in the past.

According to Defense News, the tests also demonstrated an anti-ship capability at medium range. The report by Defense News added that the systems are designed and developed with latest technologies to address emerging missile threats.
