SaveIndia offers help to ease Iran-US tensions
In a phone call on Friday evening, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi briefed his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on the latest regional developments and Iran's position. Araghchi stated that the United States' repeated violations of the ceasefire, continued military aggression, the naval blockade, and attacks on Iranian commercial shipping are the root cause of the instability gripping the region and the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed the responsibility of the international community to hold the "aggressor parties" accountable.
Jaishankar, for his part, expressed concern over the situation and its consequences for other countries, and voiced India's readiness to assist in reducing tensions. The two ministers also discussed bilateral relations.
According to Mehr News Agency, the conversation highlighted the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States, which have escalated in recent weeks. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, has been a focal point of these tensions. Iran has previously threatened to close the strait in response to US sanctions and military pressure, while the US has increased its naval presence in the region.
India, as a major importer of oil from the Middle East, has a significant interest in maintaining stability in the region. The offer of assistance from India could potentially open a diplomatic channel between Iran and the US, though no concrete steps have been announced yet.
The report by Mehr News Agency added that the two ministers also reviewed the state of bilateral relations between Iran and India, which have traditionally been strong, with cooperation in trade, energy, and infrastructure projects. However, the recent regional tensions have posed challenges to these ties.
This development comes amid ongoing efforts by various countries to de-escalate the situation in the Persian Gulf. The international community has called for restraint from all parties, and India's offer may be seen as a constructive step in that direction.
