Pezeshkian says Strait of Hormuz holds special place in regional and global security

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Wednesday that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime passages and holds a special place in regional and global security, speaking on the occasion of World Maritime Day.

Pezeshkian said that a better understanding of the seas, the development of new technologies, the enhancement of maritime safety, the harnessing of marine energy potential and the protection of marine ecosystems amount to an investment in the country's future and that of coming generations. He added that the government's duty is to pave the way for greater public and private sector involvement by reducing barriers, facilitating processes, coordinating agencies, improving infrastructure and creating an environment conducive to participation and investment.

Referring to the position of the Strait of Hormuz in the security and economy of the region and the world, the president emphasized what he described as a responsible view based on maintaining stability and the interests of the countries of the region. He said Iran's presence at sea has kept the country's vital arteries from being pushed to a standstill, and stressed the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. He further stated that sustainable security of the Persian Gulf and its waterways depends on the cooperation and responsibility of the countries of the region.

Pezeshkian used the occasion to congratulate all Iranian seafarers, staff, personnel, navy commanders and their families on World Maritime Day. He also commemorated the memory of maritime martyrs and seafarers who lost their lives in the line of duty, and prayed for the glory and prosperity of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The remarks come amid continued regional tensions over maritime security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which a significant share of global oil shipments passes. According to Mehr News, the president's comments were made during his World Maritime Day address.
