The French Navy announced that a fire broke out aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, according to a statement cited by Anadolu Agency. The navy said the fire was extinguished several hours after it started in the morning.
"There were no injuries and no impact was observed on the vessel's nuclear facilities," the navy statement said. The initial findings suggested the fire was believed "to have been caused by cutting work with a blowtorch," the statement noted. The navy reaffirmed that investigations into the incident were continuing.
The Charles de Gaulle had reportedly been docked in the Toulon roadstead, undergoing a "technical stop," since late August. It is expected to remain there until early December.
According to Mehr News, the French Navy's statement provided no further details on the extent of the damage or the duration of the investigation.
