Iran envoy says Iraq agrees to expel separatist group from Kurdistan Region

Iran's ambassador to Iraq, Mohammad Kazem Al-e-Sadeq, said on Tuesday that the two neighbouring countries have reached an agreement to evict a separatist group from the Kurdistan Region or hand its members over to Iran. The ambassador made the statement in a post on his X account.

According to Al-e-Sadeq, the agreement was reached within the framework of security cooperation between Iran and Iraq. He said an Iran-Iraq meeting was held to discuss the matter, and that Qasim al-Aboudi, Iraq's national security adviser, was in attendance.

The ambassador described the group as a separatist terrorist organisation based in the Kurdistan Region. He did not provide further details on the timeline for the expulsion or handover, or on the specific identity of the group beyond that description.

The announcement follows a period of heightened attention by Tehran to the presence of groups it designates as hostile in the northern Iraqi region. The two countries have maintained security cooperation channels in recent years, and the reported agreement is presented as an outcome of that framework.

According to Mehr News, the statement was published by the ambassador on his X account and referred to a meeting attended by Iraq's national security adviser.
