Egyptian Popular Support for Iran Amid US-Israel Conflict

A wave of popular support for Iran has emerged among ordinary Egyptians amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and the combined forces of the United States and Israel. This support, expressed through social media campaigns, videos, and popular songs, is not a fleeting reaction but a natural extension of a shared history of resistance against occupation and colonialism.

Historical memory plays a key role. On October 6, 1973, corresponding to the 10th of Ramadan 1393 AH, the Egyptian army launched a historic offensive across the Suez Canal, shattering the Bar-Lev Line and restoring Arab dignity after the 1967 Naksa. Ordinary Egyptians bore the heaviest burden, offering martyrs and prisoners of war. Today, many Egyptians see Iran as continuing this path, facing the same enemy—Israel, backed by unconditional American support.

Iran has withstood two major confrontations with the US and Israel in less than a year, in June 2025 and late February 2026. In both cases, the US and Israel failed to destroy Iran's nuclear program or achieve regime change. Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz forced a rapid American retreat, especially with the approaching FIFA World Cup. American experts have acknowledged Washington's defeat, citing flawed Mossad intelligence.

This Iranian resilience reminds Egyptians of the October War victory, where initial surprise and determination overcame technological superiority. In Cairo, Alexandria, and Upper Egypt, ordinary citizens create content exposing Western propaganda, emphasizing that "the enemy is one." This support reflects a popular rejection of American and Zionist hegemony and a belief that Iran's fall would pave the way for targeting Egypt and other Arab countries.

Despite the official Egyptian diplomatic position calling for de-escalation, the Egyptian street remains deeply sympathetic to the Iranian resistance. This apparent contradiction reflects an implicit harmony between popular awareness and official policy, a characteristic historically distinguishing Egypt.

According to Dr. Ahmed Moustafa, Director and Founder of the Asia Center for Studies & Translation and a Non-Resident Research Fellow at VIIMES in Vienna, the Egyptian people's support for Iran sends a clear message: the region no longer accepts unilateral hegemony. The common enemy—Israel and unconditional American backing—is uniting the peoples of the region. Iran has proven that popular will and indigenous technology can confront the world's strongest alliance.
