Iran FM Araghchi Says Diplomacy and Power Are Not in Conflict

Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has written a new preface to the sixth edition of his book, "The Power of Negotiation," in which he argues that diplomacy and power are not in conflict with each other. According to the preface, written in light of current developments and what he describes as military aggression by the United States and Israel, Araghchi states that power yields sustainable results only when consolidated through diplomacy.

Araghchi recalls that when the first edition of the book was published, his aim was to share the fruits of his years in the diplomatic arena and to speak of a world where dialogue, bargaining, mutual understanding, and persuasion—rather than war and bloodshed—shape the destiny of nations. He notes that at that time, few could have imagined that, in such a short span, the Islamic Republic of Iran would weather two consecutive wars in less than a year, and that Iranian diplomacy would face the most difficult and perilous conditions in its modern history.

Writing on the occasion of the book's sixth printing, Araghchi says that historic times are still being lived through. He refers to the events of the twelve-day and forty-day wars, which he says have now become a significant part of the Iranian nation's historical memory. He also notes that negotiations between Iran and the United States—aimed at reaching an agreement to permanently end the conflict—continue nearly two months after the ceasefire in the forty-day war.

Araghchi addresses a crucial question: whether negotiations with the United States are prudent, given that the two previous rounds of talks culminated in war. He argues that while this question may appear simple at first glance, it actually presents an inverted version of the truth. In his view, those two wars stemmed not from the negotiations themselves, but from the miscalculations of Iran's adversaries.

The preface comes amid ongoing diplomatic efforts and regional tensions. Araghchi's remarks underscore Iran's position that diplomacy remains a viable path despite recent military confrontations.
