China urges diplomatic solution amid US economic pressure on Iran

China has pushed back against US President Donald Trump's announcement of what he called "the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country," urging a diplomatic resolution to the standoff with Iran.

In a press briefing in Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Lin Jian said, "Imposing sanctions and pressuring do not help to solve the issue." He added, "China calls on relevant parties to adopt responsible measures and solve the issues through diplomatic and political means." His remarks were reported by Anadolu Agency.

Trump's announcement, made on Wednesday, escalates his administration's campaign against Iran. He warned that countries and companies that "assist" Tehran would face severe economic consequences. The US would seek to cut off financial and commercial channels that provide Iran with economic support. "Today, I am also announcing that any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face tremendous economic consequences," Trump said.

The move comes amid ongoing tensions between the US and Iran. In February, the US and Israel launched a war of aggression against Iran, which resulted in thousands of deaths. In response, Tehran retaliated against US bases and assets in the Middle East.

China's call for diplomatic engagement reflects its broader stance on the Iran nuclear issue and its commitment to the Iran-China 25-year cooperation agreement. The agreement, signed in 2021, outlines long-term economic and political cooperation between the two countries, including in energy, infrastructure, and banking.
